Activating Third Person Perspective?

I tried hitting the 9 key to activate the 3rd person view, but it didn't switch from 1st person. I'm using 2.7.1 under RPG mode in case it helps. How can I get it to work?

it may be disabled in RPG mode...

Is there anyway to enable it in RPG mode? I don't really like the 1st person perspective. If not, I guess I'll forget about the map making contest and make a side scroller...

if you must, you can type /thirdperson 1 manually
the top row of keys (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0) are bound to act as hotkeys - they can currently be used to quickly navigate dialogue as well as equip hotkey'd items
