Comparison with Cube 2 Engine

Post by adshead »

Hi,

I realise that Sandbox is based on the cube 2 engine - but I wondered what the differences are? i.e has cube 2 got features that Sandbox doesn't and vice versa? I'd like to build a simple RPG/Adventure game but would also like to add some action elements such as a bit of FPS so am trying to decide which of the engines is more suitable.

Also, how scriptable are the engines? I would like to build things like triggers for opening doors, picking up items etc and I would prefer to user proper speech for dialogue between characters rather than the text based dialog boxes that I see in the Sandbox demos.

Sorry for all the questions, I am new and its quite hard to determine whether Sandbox is aimed more at children or whether it could be used for a more adult oriented game.

Many thanks for any answers anyone can give!

Sandbox is kept relatively up to date with the features of Cube 2. The focus of Cube 2 is deathmatch while the focus of Sandbox is game making so we have done a lot to try to make life easier on the creation end. Violence has been removed from the main version of Sandbox since it is meant to be kid friendly, though the RPG has kid friendly action, though you could easily do what you wanted with that. That is the Master Chef Ogro download. Also the newer RPG will be quite awesome when it is ready to go. For your speech you could just have it trigger sound files to play the speech. You can do item pick ups and trigger opening doors and all that good stuff. Download it and check it out :) 2.4 should have quite a bit more of offer as well when it comes out. Take care!

Thanks for the quick response!
Thats helped me to decide that Sandbox sounds like the engine of choice for my needs - so time to start playing :)
