Yea but zbrush is damn expensive for most people.

You could use blender to skin and animate, and for the models you can use blender too, or google sketchup, or wings3d

Does making skins for character work the same at the moment? I would be interesting in doing it, although I might not be the most talented person, but I want to give it a try
