Re: Other engines
If you want a engine alot like this then use this
or sauerbraten. but if you want a proffessional engine then use unity3d

Re: Other engines
When you are talking about professional engine, I guess it depends what you mean. You can actually do a lot more with Sandbox than you can do with major engines for if no other reason, you have total access to the source code. I have used many engines in the past over my 10+ years of game design experience, torque, Doom 3, Halflife, Halflife 2, Unreal 2004, etc and I much much much rather use Sandbox for a few reasons:
#1 Easy of use and in game editing. This speeds up production time incredibly.
#2 Complete access to the source, very rarely to get this unless you pay A LOT of money. Also this means you can do ANYTHING you want, with no limits, whereas engines where you don't have the full source, you are definitely going to have limits.
#3 Cross platform
#4 Ability to make standalone games instead of just mods
#5 Cube 2 is constantly updating not including our updates which = even more awesomeness
I'm sure many more but I'm sleepy and want to go back to bed
If you have any more questions on this I'd be happy to answer. Take care.

Re: Other engines
dark basic pro is a good start to learn how to code, but to be honest i have used them all, well, studied most of them any how and well, just one look into this one here, showed me this is the best one to go with. most engines out there are direct x, wich means well, slow frame rates. in this puppy here, I get around 7 to 8 frames per second with alot of stuff in my level but my pc still pushes everything like if it where 50 frames per second. the reason is because like i learned this is open code, nothing to do with direct x. pure code from windows itself. the only thing i find to be a real pain the last 2 days of switching to this engine is the model conversion. but this is due to the skin modifier. and this tells you one thing. if the engine is pushing only the skin modifier then your pc will push the game real fast no matter how many guys you have in game. so far this is my point of view with this engine alone. plus it is real easy to edit the levels. like in fps creator, all you need to do is drop in your models, click run then boom, you have a game. but the frames per seconds are lost, the environment is real bad, there are no real time shaders for anything. there shader code is a little flacky to most pcs cant run them. you need a shader card 3.0 or higher to push any of their shaders. now dark basic pro is alot better then fps creator. but there is also some problems there to. its written directly from direct x, so you are going to have some problems. I always did myself. my second game made in dark basic pro dragged to where my pc would freeze. now I dont know alot about this engine yet, but from what i see in the code already tells me this is the next gen engine, even though it comes from cube. just give me a couple months to incorporate some real good models for this engine and you will see a big difference.

Re: Other engines
I am happy to hear that too because at the moment I am using two game engines.
I really love sandbox. When I first saw it then I were like wtf? How would I use this thing? That was because It was like the 2nd game engine what I had used
The first one was atmosphir which was a bit easyer to understand at the first look. But when I got to know sandbox then I liked it really much
Now I am a big fan of sandbox and I would really like to see the water wars and save games, also I would like to see your medieval models
Also I am using unity but that is a bit more complicated than sandbox. Maybe a bit is a little to soft
MUCH more complicated
I have made some models in blender so I might give them to use for sandbox too
but first I have to texture them (I can model but im awful at animating and textureing
)

Re: Other engines
Sandbox is the most versatile and powerful engine that I've ever come across, and I've used some good ones. I'd personally encourage you to stick around for a little longer and see the possibilities you can encounter with this engine. It's incredible, but no one has made anything truly "incredible" with it yet, so if you're serious about making a game, I'd encourage you to stick around.
P.S. :: If it's any consent, I'm 17 and love the engine.
